After-School Program

Phoenix Rising After School Program powered by Girls Inc.

Who are we?

Girls Inc. of Alameda County has been serving the Bay Area for over 60 years with a mission to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold; due to the outstanding outcomes of our programs, particularly in literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), we have been expanding our programing to include boys with our partners, Brothers on the Rise.

With the support of Principal Umat, Girls Inc. will add a strong academic component, including STEM, in addition to homework support, study skills, College/career readiness and enrichment activities, like Sports, Wellness, and Community Building. Girls Inc. strongly upholds and supports the WOMS mission and will provide a nurturing and safe environment for both boys and girls during the after-school hours. The purpose of our program is to expand learning beyond the school day and complement daily classroom instruction, while providing a structured environment that encourages creativity, imagination, and flexibility.

What do we do?

  • Academic Engagement: STEM, Basic Career Exploration, Homework Support
  • Healthy Living: Nutrition, Sports, Adolescent Health, Social Emotional Development
  • Leadership Development: Confidence, Relationships with Peers and Adults, Positive Self and Community Images, Positive Risk-Taking
  • Gender Specific Programming: We support the individual growth of boys and girls in same-gender settings for activities like sports, STEM and social-emotional learning. Adolescent boys and girls have different needs and participate differently when they are in single gender spaces; these groups give them a unique opportunity to build brotherhood and sisterhood in addition to other peer relationships.
